The Reign of Octavian - 1135 Words

Octavian, the sole heir and successor of Julius Caesar overcame significant impediments in his rise to becoming Rome’s first emperor. Aged only nineteen at the time of Caesars assassination in March 44BC Octavian’s intelligence and fortitude proved successful over the barriers of youth, inexperience and the political opposition that he faced. Octavian went on to have one of the most famous political careers of all time to defeat the Senate, Marc Antony, and gain sole control over the Roman Empire. Before Caesars assassination Caesar and Octavian had built a powerful relationship that proved instrumental in Octavian’s career. To assert political power in the Roman Empire Octavian’s first action was to gain loyalty among the Roman people and build his reputation. In Illyricum at the time of Caesars assassination he took with him a small group of friends that went to the south of Italy to visit Caesars allies and clients. Whilst there he assessed the position in Rome and the best course of action he could take to gain control. Once in Rome he concentrated on commemorating Caesars death and seeking vengeance against his assassins which was in contrast with Antony’s views. Octavian then began to build a relationship with the Roman mob, they were one of Caesars main power bases and very influential in the Roman Empire. To build a positive relationship he first paid the legacies that were left to the people of Rome by Caesar. As the processing of Caesars will was held up and Antony refused to return Caesars money Octavian pad the people out of his own pocket. This action gained loyalty and began t o pave the way for a constructive relationship between Octavian and the Roman people. Integration is a topic should be talked about because it is a topic that has multiple view points some negative and some positives. No matter the viewpoints it is important to consider how integration impacts the students. At the end of the day what students retain is what matters and retaining information can happen in a variety of different ways. Integration provides a way to connect multiple subjects and allows students to make connections. Integration can be difficult for teachers to teach because the integration does not fit well, but the outcome of integration is beneficial. With the heavy weight of assessments and standardized, tests teachers need to make sure that whatever they teach needs to connect to standards and unites. Science has become a subject that has been put on the back burner because tests like Maps and Paws testing do not assess science. There are many factors that affect what and how teachers teach. Beauty In the Struggle free essay sample

In case my transcript isnt a clear enough indication, I am not and have never been a math person. I dont get excited at the thought of breaking down a polynomial, and in my free time, Sudoku would probably come last on my list-o-fun. During my educational career I heard it a million times: â€Å"Youre just not a math person, Maeve.† Ive taken it in, ducked around it in my head, and used it to silence the ongoing internal dialogue. Generally the phrase allowed me to keep my head up through a few failed tests, one yelling mother, and numerous worried teachers. Yet every day, I find myself in this flirtatious relationship of mixed signals on the chalkboard, so I cannot escape through the open graphs and thick brackets that lock me in. Its not that I fear math, or even hate it; we just dont get along. It means much more than statistics and formulas; it is a constant reminder of the failure of my last 13 years of schooling, the recurring memories of my classmates staring as I stumbled up to the chalkboard from first grade all the way to eleventh. It is a reminder of the countless hours I have spent going to teachers – both in school and out – to review tests and homework that I couldnt wrap my head around, while my friends carelessly pranced off to other enjoyable activities. It is a reminder of my classmates turning to me during group work and saying, â€Å"This is so easy, Maeve. Why dont you get it?† then listening to my parents when I got home, â€Å"What school is going to take you with these grades, Maeve?† For a long time I thought there was something wrong with me. All the hours I spent studying seemed fruitless, the good grades constantly overshadowed by the bad. Sometimes it seemed like I had a cruel disease that prevented me from understanding, but that wasnt the case. I struggle at math, plain and simple. In my junior year of high school, I experienced one of the most defining moments of my life. On this day, the teacher announced a new group project. For most kids group work is fun; for me its a roadblock, a cul-de-sac, a barricading wall taunting me. When it comes to math group work, I am the timid child picked last for dodgeball. I am the kid in the corner. At 17, this is still true. As loud and sarcastic and outgoing as I can be, when it comes to math I feel out of my league – a league I dont aspire to play in. Sitting in my seat, shuddering at the thought of finding a group, my friend Emily – a fellow math â€Å"genius† – and I decided to work together. No one else was going to ask us to partner up, so we would work at our own slow pace and see the teacher for whatever help we needed. Walking through the halls later that day, I overheard a conversation between two other classmates working on the same project, a conversation that changed my way of thinking. They were laughing and I heard them say our names. â€Å"How stupid can those two be? I guess its good theyre together – then no one else has to be with dumb and dumber.† In that moment, years of embarrassment, self-consciousness, and disappointment rushed in and slapped me in the face. But it didnt stop me. Emily and I did the project together and received an A against all odds. Sometimes being knocked down is what we need most; sometimes theres beauty in the struggle. I know what youre probably thinking right now. Why in the world is this girl going on about how terrible she is at math? Shes just digging herself into a hole. Maybe youre right. But I am not writing this essay to endorse the tantalizing theorems and mind-boggling equations that have conquered and devastated my GPA for the past four years. I am writing this because my lack of an A on every test does not mean I am incapable of changing the world. I know that Ill be rejected from some schools, but my grades reflect only one part of my character. They do not show the Maeve who is capable of winning a three-mile cross-country race. They do not show the Maeve who was a leader on her sophomore retreat. They do not show the Maeve who took a 17-hour train ride to New Orleans to spend a week doing community service. Do I think my grades accurately reflect my academic abilities? No. But I can speak, and I can write, and I can be personable and understanding. Maybe thats nothing compared to mastering trigonometry, but its enough for me. Not because I dont have high standards but because I dont believe that my grades reflect who am I or what I am capable of doing. If given the chance, that is what I plan on proving. I recognize my limits and my talents. I accept my flaws. I accept that I will probably never be a mathematician, and I accept that there is beauty in the struggle.

The Life And Works Of Bertolt Brecht The Life and Works of Bertolt Brecht Bertolt Brecht was one of the chief innovators of modern theatrical techniques. He was both a poet and a playwright all in one. His epic theatrical creations developed drama as a forum for social and idealistic causes. Brecht's imagination, artistic genius, and social views distinguish his work and his life. Eugen Bertolt Brecht was born February 10, 1898 in Augsburg Germany, a town in Bavaria. His family was of middle class, which he came to resent, in favor of a Marxist proletarian society. In 1917 he attended Ludwig Maximillian University, in Munich, where he studied medicine. Towards the end of the First World War, Brecht served in a military hospital. During this time in 199918, he wrote his first piece of work Baal, however it was not published until a later time. In 1922 he wrote his first success, Drums in the Night. In 1923 Baal was finally produced. Until this time Brecht had lived in Bavaria. In 1924 he moved to Berlin, where he developed a strong antibourgeois attitude. Several people of his generation developed similar attitudes, as a result of the disappointing post World War I society in Germany. Among his friends, at this time, was a group of Dadaist, who aimed at destroying what they called the false standards and ideals of the bourgeois society. Brecht also became acquainted with a prominent theoretician named Karl Korsch, who taught him the elements of Marxism. During this time period from 1924 to 1933, Brecht worked briefly with the directors Max Reinhardt and Erwin Piscator. However he mainly worked with his own group of associates. In 1924 he wrote his first professional production Edward II. In 1927 he wrote A manual of Piety. In 1928, while working with the composer Kurt Weil, Bertolt Brecht created what many believe to be his finest piece of work; The Threepenny Opera; a satirical and successful ballad opera. In 1 930 he wrote The Rise and Fall of the Town of Mahogany. Also during this year he wrote his first ?exemplary plays,? A Man's Man, which introduced his unorthodox idea of ?epic theatre.? Epic theatre is a technique created by Brecht, which causes the audience to feel no emotions about a play, but to think critically about its content. This would become a well-used and important technique in Brecht's later plays. In 1933 Brecht's Marxist political beliefs forced him to go into self-imposed exile, from fascists Germany. His writings had made him a natural enemy of the National Socialists, rising to power in his native country. He first managed to escape to Switzerland, then to Scandinavia. With help from some of his fellow artists and exiles, especially Lion Feuchtwagner, Brecht was able to come to the United States of America. He became anti-Nazi writer for a periodical published in Moscow, and produced the 1938 drama Fear and Misery of the Third Reich. During this time Brecht wrote what are critically regarded as his greatest works. In 1943 Brecht's desire to motivate social concerns, in his audience, led to the play The life of Galileo. In this play, through the character Galileo, Brecht reexamines the recurrent theme of obstacles to social progress. In 1949, he created Mother Courage and her Children, which enlists the spectators' feelings as well as their reason. This play was both a success and a failure. It was a success because it was highly popular, but it was a failure in that it caused the audience to feel sympathy for its characters, which violated Brecht's technique of ?epic theatre.? In these mature works Brecht overgrew the single-minded didactic message of his earlier pieces, and achieved complex themes that would be impermissible under the official policies of communism. For a brief period of time, Brecht lived in Hollywood on1954 argyle Avenue. He then moved into a house on 817 25th Street in Santa Monica, from 1941 to 1942.
